TYDI
2009 was a mammoth year for the man we know as tyDi. As a DJ, the 22 year-old was voted #1 in Australia for the second year running (Sony ITM DJ Poll), and spent the year selling out venues on multiple national tours. He is regular on the prominent Australian festival circuit and ended 2008 with a bang by co-headlining Melbourne’s Sensation NYE party at the Telstra Dome. Internationally he played main stage to 20,000 at the world famous Trance Energy event in Utrecht, Holland and toured Malaysia, Singapore and Asia. And to top it all off – he debuted at #52 in the almighty DJ Mag Top 100. If that wasn’t enough; try closing the year in style by playing to an 8000 strong crowd with a live band with Audrey Gallagher on vocals. What a year. Well now as the clock ticks forward, 2010 starts in a similar vein. With an early #1 spot on the Beatport trance charts with the club track ‘Good Dream’ and tours of the US and Asia it’s no wonder tyDi conquered one of his biggest achievements yet; a nomination as ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in the International Dance Music Awards in which tyDi reigned supreme over an all star cast to take out the award. With the UK and Europe now firmly in his grasp, tyDi is undoubtedly the one to watch in 2010!
As a producer, his work can be found on labels across the globe, including world #1 DJ Armin van Buuren’s own label, Armada. He produced the soundtrack for hard-hitting government advertising, video games and luxury property developments. His debut artist album ‘Look Closer’ went straight to the #2 spot on the Australian Dance albums chart and on numerous occasions his tracks hit the top of the Beatport download charts.
But tyDi is so much more than either of these two personas alone. With a grounding in classical theory, and a view to the contemporary, tyDi is a new breed of artist. As a 13 year-old living on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, tyDi was a humble bedroom drummer, rhythm his driving force and punk his favourite style. By 15, he had traded in his drum kit for a set of Technics 1200s, and suddenly, the beat became his own.
“There was no real time when I decided that I was going to do this for a living,” tyDi begins. “It was just always there – I always felt that music was it for me, and that was what I had to do.”
So with music his driving force and turntables at the ready, tyDi began his quest. He entered Brisbane DJ Wars when he was just 16, and won. He took out his next competition, and then next, and soon he found himself being paid to do what he loved.
“I started getting paid gigs when I was 16, not long after I’d won a few comps – but I had to be escorted in and out of the clubs because of my age. That was surreal.”
Over the next few years, the bookings increased, as did his reputation. His skills earned him a residency at Brisbane’s famed Family nightclub, and clubs across the country were beating a path to his door.
With so much demand and praise, tyDi could have easily decided to choose the simple life – take an easy paycheck each week, playing the same tunes, with the same skills to the same people – but his love of music and his desire to be more than just a disc jockey pulled him back again.
Fresh out of high school, tyDi was invited to study at the renowned Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where he enrolled in the study of Music Technology. “People ask me why I would bother studying when I’m already doing well in my field – but I believe knowledge is power, and it’s important for me to learn everything I can about sound and my passion in
life. Music is powerful on so many levels, I want to learn, to know it inside and out,” tyDi explains.
And learn he did. Just two years out of high school, tyDi entered his first Sony inthemix Top 50 DJ Poll, and rocketed to the #12 spot. One year later, he cracked not only the top 10, but the top 5, taking out the #4 position. And in 2008, with his tracks signed to labels across the world, and praise for his work flooding in from contemporaries far and wide, he was crowned Australia’s #1only to back in up in 2009 with a second win.
An amazing achievement for someone so young, but this accolade was far from the end of the story. Late in 2008, tyDi hit the studio to produce his debut release. Moving away from his traditional roots, he sought to include real strings, keys and drums in his productions. He insisted on voices that were melodic, emotive and had the power to tell a story.
In pursing this new style, tyDi also chose to team up with ARIA nominated producer Sameer Sengupta, whose work includes credits for artists such as Paul Mac, Sneaky Sound System and The Potbelleez. The result – ‘Look Closer’ the critically acclaimed long player that hit the charts running and made an impressive imprint on the Australian dance scene.
As for the future, it only looks bright as tyDi ventures into radio syndication with ‘Global Soundsystem’ his very own weekly worldwide radio show which launched in November, 2009. After hosting Mix Up on Australia’s largest national radio station Triple J, requests came flooding in for radio show with the tyDi imprint. With reach in over 20 countries, watch this space as tyDi becomes a brand synonymous with world class dance music. In 2010 tyDi will mix Trance Nation for Ministry of Sound for the second year running, release his own record label under the Global Soundsystem, banner and tour Europe, The US and Asia two times over.
