WHAT: On this date, Deborah “Debbie” Gibson hits the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with “Foolish Beat.” It was the first ballad release from her debut album “Out of Blue.” This made Gibson the youngest person to write, produce and perform a number one single – a record she still holds today in the Guinness Book of World Records. The next day she graduated from high school.

WHEN: June 25, 1988

WHERE: Billboard Hot 100

WHO: The “Original Pop Princess” exploded on the pop music scene at the tender age of 16. To date, she has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide. After conquering the pop world, she set her sights on the theater starring in numerous Broadway roles. She then bridged the gap between pop music and Broadway with her one-woman show, “Pop Goes Broadway.”

Focusing now on her passion and commitment to foster and mentor young performers, she founded “Deborah Gibson’s Camp Electric Youth.” The summer camp, which runs July 7 – 18, is for serious performers ages 7 to 17. She’s also a celebrity judge for Total Pop Star, the online singing competition and reality TV show. From number one hits and platinum albums to starring roles on Broadway, film and TV, Gibson has proven during the past 20 years she’s a true entertainer and one that will have continued success for another 20 years.
