On Thursday, November 17th, 2011 DJMellStarr (a “Master of The Mix” DJ Contestant sponsored by Smirnoff) will be hosting his 3rd annual DJ Showcase at Rock & Soul Dj Equipment & Records Store (located at 462 7th avenue between 35th & 36th Street), one of the first and oldest record shops in the world. The Showcase will display the skills and techniques of a Turntablist which include but are not limited to beat mixing/matching, scratching and beat juggling to manipulate sounds and create music. This event is not a competition but, a friendly gathering to see who has developed the fastest, most innovative/creative techniques while using upscale equipment.

LA’s Top Jazz Players Go Electronic as Simplexity with Producers Steve Tavaglione and John von Seggern

Los Angeles – November 12, 2009 – West Coast electronic jazz group Simplexity (http://www.myspace.com/simplexitymusic) will be releasing their debut album Extreme Measures worldwide on Tuesday February 2, 2010.

Simplexity is a hyper-dimensional electronic jazz project formed by producer, noted computer musician and bassist John von Seggern together with Los Angeles sound designer and top studio musician Steve Tavaglione, joined by some of the most innovative and respected jazz players on the West Coast – keys player John Beasley, drummer Gary Novak, trumpeter Walt Fowler, and clarinetist/EVI player Judd Miller. The album also contains some of the last recordings of bassist Dave Carpenter, to whom Extreme Measures is dedicated.

Extreme Measures was recorded over a couple days of jam sessions and overdubs at drummer Gary Novak’s Kronos Recording studio in Burbank. Sax, drums, keyboards, and bass were mixed and combined with computer beats and grooves in live session, then later edited and remixed into compositions by John von Seggern, nicknamed John von Badass by the players, although he typically just goes by John von.

The release event for Extreme Measures will be a live performance by Simplexity taking place at Los Angeles’ home for experimental instrumental music, ResBox on January 21 at 8pm. ResBox is a monthly event featuring the world’s best experimental music, curated by musician and filmmaker Hans Fjellestad. The event takes place at the Steve Allen Theater at the Center for Inquiry West, 4773 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027.

Although Extreme Measures is the group’s first release under the Simplexity name, the members of this illustrious group are each well-known in their own right as giants of the West Coast music scene. Between them, they have amassed hundreds of recording credits for albums, film and television.

Producer/remixer John von Seggern is a sound designer, bassist and DJ, who relocated to Southern California in 2001 after a decade spent in Asia (Tokyo and Hong Kong) performing and recording with some of the region’s most influential artists. Von Seggern now lives in Los Angeles, where he plays techno at warehouse events and runs the digital labels Vibration Institute and Xeriscape. He also works for German music software company Native Instruments and has been a collaborator and music technology consultant for numerous Hollywood composers and producers. John von specializes in cutting-edge beats and sounds as well as creating new fusions and mixtures of music from genres around the world.

Steve Tavaglione who co-produced and played saxophone and electronics on Extreme Measures is a woodwind and EWI musician most notable for his extensive film and TV music credits including work on “CSI,” “CSI:NY,” WALL-E, Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 and many, many more. He has recorded and performed with Sergio Mendes, Roger Waters, Michael Jackson, Vinnie Colaiuta, John Patitucci, Scott Kinsey, Scott Henderson and countless others.

John Beasley is a composer, pianist, producer, and arranger who has recorded and performed with many major innovators of modern music including Miles Davis, Jon Hassell, Freddie Hubbard, Steely Dan, James Brown and Chick Corea. He has released nine solo recordings including his recent, acclaimed album Positootly. Additionally he is one of the most in demand players and music directors for films and television shows in Hollywood on projects such as Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Dreamgirls, “The Simpsons,” Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, “American Idol” and many more.

Drummer Gary Novak has worked with such musical greats as Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, David Sanborn, Anita Baker, Lee Ritenour, George Benson, Chick Corea, Allan Holdsworth, and Alanis Morissette. He also performs on many film and television scores in addition to engineering and producing in his own Kronos Recording studio where Extreme Measures was recorded.

The late, great, bassist Dave Carpenter appeared on over two hundred recordings, and had dozens of television, film scores and soundtracks to his recording credit; Extreme Measures was one of the last projects he recorded on. He worked with many celebrated jazz artists such as Allan Holdsworth, Peter Erskine, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Lee Ritenour, Rod Stewart, Barbara Streisand, David Benoit, Boz Scaggs, and more. He also appeared as a soloist with the Los Angeles and Berlin Philharmonics as well as the Tanglewood and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras. He was a beloved friend to the musicians of Simplexity and many musicians and friends throughout the music world who feel this loss deeply.

Walt Fowler is yet an another titanic player in Los Angeles, most noted for his work with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention he has also played with Ray Charles, Buddy Rich, James Taylor, George Benson, Diana Ross, James Brown, Roberta Flack, Stanley Clarke, The Doors, Manhattan Transfer, Fishbone, and many others. Additionally he is an in demand player and orchestrator on top Hollywood Films such as Dark Knight, The Simpsons Movie and Transformers to name just some recent projects.

Judd Miller is arguably the top EVI player in the world. His expertise on the instrument and his superlative sound design from his enormous, self-created sound design library has established him as one of the most popular musicians for top movie scores. His has worked with composers Maurice Jarre, Stewart Copeland, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, John Williams, James Horner, and more. His programming and sound design skills are also well known in the jazz world including ongoing collaborations with such artists as the Yellowjackets, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Charlie Haden, and many, many more.

For over a decade Australian trio Infusion – Manny Sharrad, Frank Xavier and Jamie Stevens – have expanded minds, built bridges and been adorned with affection from Wollongong to Williamsburg and back with their uniquely placeless, always evolutionary approach to creating truly futuristic transcendental dance music.

Just when it feels like there are no more avenues for an act of Infusion’s pedigree to go down, they’ve flipped and gone down one you never expected but always wanted them to take – the modern pop superhighway. All Night Sun Light (Omnis Recordings) achieves where so many other attempts at dance pop fails – authenticity. Infusion’s always dabbled in a unique blend of dance and pop but it’s fully realized over these 11 shimmering displays of machine pop created in the dark world of strobes and sweat.

“2 Player Game” opens the suite with a sinister synth-line before settling into the kind of groove Depeche Mode fans die for; “All That’s In Your Head” is the pulsing electropop heartbeat of a wasted romance; while “Falling Into Place” feels like the long, dark walk home from the night of your life. It’s got “movie scene transition” written all over it. “Gotta Leave Now” is an ecstatic triumph, possibly the most irrepressible future pop dart in this impressive records artillery, while “Head Over Heels” comes out of the blocks feeling like T-Rex. Second single “Dogtown” is down and dirty sex-e-lectro for those carnal times while third single “Try It On” is a sophisticated love song made for late night propositions.

Infusion’s songwriting has always been a strong point for the band, but it really comes out on some of the albums downtempo tracks. Lead single “So Soon” (CD version offered free) is gorgeous psychedelic electronic pop on its own, but appropriated for the dancefloor courtesy of remixes from King Unique, Spooky and Infusion. “Justified” has a folky, Woodstock call-for-action vibe about it while “Horizon” is a ballad bringing forth shades of Dave Gahan.

Again written and produced by the band themselves in just about every studio, bedroom and shed that would take them between Melbourne, Sydney, Angelsea, The Mornington Peninsula, Brighton UK and Los Angeles, All Night Sun Light was then shipped to James Brown [no, not that one – co-producer to Alan Moulder, Trent Reznor etc] in New York, who mixed the record in Phillip Glass’ Looking Glass Studios.

“It’s been a very long and hard road in making this album ourselves but having complete control meant we achieved everything we wanted to with it. It was great working with the Victoria Philharmonic Orchestra, Kram – who did some drumming along with T-Rek, our guitarist friends and a big brash brassy band we used for “Memory Cheats.” We also were lucky to have the film scoring talents of Rajan Kamahl and Jono Fernandez to assist in the string arrangements in the more epic tracks such as “Falling Into Place” and Horizons,” singer Manny Sharrad says

After their last album, Six Feet Above Yesterday, Infusion spent the better part of three years taking that record to the people, touring extensively not only around Australia but also traipsing through Europe, North and South America, and Asia. They also lent their definitive touch to remixes of artists including The Cure. The resultant album that’s been presented is one that reeks of travel and experience, both geographical and psychological.

SOUTHERN FOLK – ON THERE GRIND IN ATL

Southern Folk consist of two emcees (Mr. Quiji) born Marques Parks and (Kev da Key) born Kevin Heard. The group has been together over 7 years, started out by dominating local talent shows and worked their way up the underground ladder, wining every showcase they ever entered ranging from Atlanta Ga, Griffin Ga, Barnsville Ga, North Carolina, South Carolina as well as Savannah Ga.

Southern Folk started headlining their own shows at Lenny’s bar in Atlanta along side their GA militia affiliates (The Wheeler Boys)  to officially make their presence felt in their city sharing the stage with the likes of Killer Mike, Khujo Goodie, Cool Breeze, Nappy Roots, and other Legends from the south. Southern Folk’s music reflects their real life experiences and things that happen in the world today, (example) the song “UNEMPLOYED” is a very real song that has a lot to do wit the unemployment rate right now and the recession, but still a certified hit.

The two emcees has mastered the art of word play as well as the craft of poetry in motion to cultivated their own unique style. In 2008 the group became Slip N Slides Dj’s promo artist, the Slip N Slide Dj’s help promote and break the hit singles “LOOK AT ME” and “38 HOT”, the singles have been featured on multiple mixtapes by various established Dj’s in the game right now, with Southern Folk on their grind and investing in themselves the group is sure to be well on their way to hip-hop stardom.
