On Thursday, November 17th, 2011 DJMellStarr (a “Master of The Mix” DJ Contestant sponsored by Smirnoff) will be hosting his 3rd annual DJ Showcase at Rock & Soul Dj Equipment & Records Store (located at 462 7th avenue between 35th & 36th Street), one of the first and oldest record shops in the world. After more than 35 years in business, Rock & Soul has become the most famous for serving some of the biggest names in the DJ/music world such as Q-Tip, Black Moon, Nas, Naughty by Nature and Kid Capri. They carry the world’s largest selection of hip hop, R&B, Rock, Reggae, Dance and Classics on vinyl. These are the reasons why DJ Mell Starr chooses to hold his annual events at this special and iconic venue.

It is proposed that On Thursday, November 17th 200 to 300 guests and 15 hand picked Dj’s will attend the “All Vinyl DJ Showcase” that begins at 2pm and ends promptly at 7pm. The Showcase will display the skills and techniques of a Turntablist which include but are not limited to beat mixing/matching, scratching and beat juggling to manipulate sounds and create music. This event is not a competition but, a friendly gathering to see who has developed the fastest, most innovative/creative techniques while using upscale equipment.

Deathface is the pioneer of the next generation of digital hardcore. Deathface is the soundtrack to an art-rave in hell, backed by a chaotic live show that whips head-bangers and closet hair-pullers into a pagan frenzy. Fire pits flare as sinners boil in a cauldron of tweaked analog synth melodies, demonic dubstep beats and black metal rage, chopped and screwed as only he can. The chairman of the dark arts is Johnny Love, one-half of the now-defunct Guns N’ Bombs duo and the evil warlock of Brooklyn’s infamous Trouble & Bass Records crew. Following critical acclaim for his first Deathface release – May 2010’s The Horror EP – Johnny is back for more with Fall Of Man.

Fall Of Man is a six-track EP inspired by Midwest hardcore of the 90’s and Magic the Gathering, woodland bonfire parties and white trash drug debauchery, Atari Teenage Riot and Aleister Crowley. Johnny’s rave roots are showcased on opening track “Blood Rave“; with a classic 303 acid line that runs head on into a wall of choppy breaks and heavy bass. As intense as this is, it does nothing to prepare you for what’s to come! The title track – “Fall Of Man” is pure black magic dubstep, the soundtrack to The Omen’s Damien Thorn and The Exorcist’s Regan MacNeil dropping 2C-B at Anton LaVey’s first rave. As the EP moves on, things get even harder-core with the roundhouse kick of “Gift Of Fury” and “Sick of It ” featuring vocals from Adri Law, Deathface’s intense new vocalist in the vein of Hanin Elias (Atari Teenage Riot) and Alice Glass (Crystal Castles).

Johnny truly a movement started and one of the most provocative figures in dance music. A native of Southside Chicago, Johnny rose to infamy in his hometown in the early 2000’s throwing a series of events at The Jerkstore that shunned predictable-dance-rock for eclectic and loose cuts from minimal techno to French touch house. The parties got so wild that Love was imprisoned by the Chicago police on more than one occasion. With things too hot in Chicago, Johnny moved to Los Angeles and formed hard-hitting electro-house duo Guns N’ Bombs who were quickly offered a contract by Kitsuné founder Gildas Loaec. After a vast amount of critical acclaim and the making of many friends, enemies and frenemies Guns N’ Bombs disbanded in 2009, and Johnny decamped to a hideaway in Charlotte, NC to craft Deathface’s swift and deadly takeover and work on various collaborations, including an amazing t-shirt through Mishka designed by Seattles death-rock-obsessed streetwear giants Actual Pain.

Deathface is currently planning the Fall Of Man Tour (a sequel to 2010’s American Gothic tour) for April and dates will be announced shortly.  Deathface will also appear at SXSW and in Miami during Ultra week.

In his previous life Shem McCauley (AKA Slacker) was considered one of the most prolific progressive house producers in the business. His tracks and remixes were played by the genre’s most popular DJs and they landed on the finest mix compilations. However, with the business changing and tastes shifting Shem grew increasingly frustrated with the type of music “the business” was looking for. So he did the unthinkable – he disappeared. This UK native moved to Bangkok, Thailand, cut off communication with the industry, started a new job …and a new life. So, it’s been two years in Thailand and Slacker is back with an album that could have only been created in total isolation from the industry. It’s not progressive house, but this is progressive electronic down tempo music.

We hate to make comparisons but Start A New Life really does remind us of those classic UK downtempo albums from the 90’s and early 2000’s. It makes sense because Shem was a huge fan of this genre but never had the correct forum to release his own music of this type. The influences are apparent and when listening to Start A New Life you’ll pick of pieces of The Sabres Of Paradise “Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)”, Cocteau Twins “Cherry-Coloured Funk”, Moby “Go (Jam & Spoon Remix)”, Coldcut “Autumn Leaves”, Boards Of Canada Music Has The Right To Children, Future Sound Of London Accelerator, Dusted When We Were Young, and of course, The KLF Chill Out album.

“In the 90’s I was doing progressive house and endless club remixes but I originally came from Hip-Hop and rare groove. So my influence was definitely based around funky beats and slow stuff,” Shem says. “I always wanted to do an album like “Start A New Life” but never had the balls or circumstance to get it together. Towards the last four or five years of my life in the UK I was completely disillusioned, didn’t enjoy making music and eventually stopped. I made the choice to come out to Bangkok and found instant happiness with my new chilled existence. I pulled out the old demos and wrote more and more. [The KLF’s] “Chill Out” and Future Sound Of London’s “Tales Of Ephidrina” are some of my favorite albums, so I started to create an album based on my love of these works. Stylistically, it might sound like a big change, but for me, it’s like expressing the stuff I was never previously able to.”

While Shem is now back doing music, the intention to leave his previous career behind was real. In fact, he originally arrived in Bangkok with two suitcases and no equipment. He started teaching yoga and spent time getting his health back together. When it came time to revisit music there wasn’t a fancy studio or even a traditional space to create in. Rather, Shem wrote the entire album on his laptop in the food court of a Bangkok shopping mall. Yes, it’s a bit unconventional for what we’ve come to expect from today’s glitzy studios and production techniques, but Start A New Life is more honest than anything you’re bound to hear from the genre. After all, it’s a living documentation of Shem McCauley’s new life.
