It’s always nice to be able to pass along awesome posts like this one!  The flyer says a lot; and also opens up a giant “can of worms” regarding the topic of DVS (Serato, Traktor, Torq, etc.) DJs.  We love it all over here and have been floored by the recent advances in DVS technology.  We also like a good debate.  Be on the lookout for some hands-on reviews in the very near future!   –Editors

On Thursday, November 17th, 2011 DJMellStarr (a “Master of The Mix” DJ Contestant sponsored by Smirnoff) will be hosting his 3rd annual DJ Showcase at Rock & Soul Dj Equipment & Records Store (located at 462 7th avenue between 35th & 36th Street), one of the first and oldest record shops in the world. After more than 35 years in business, Rock & Soul has become the most famous for serving some of the biggest names in the DJ/music world such as Q-Tip, Black Moon, Nas, Naughty by Nature and Kid Capri. They carry the world’s largest selection of hip hop, R&B, Rock, Reggae, Dance and Classics on vinyl. These are the reasons why DJ Mell Starr chooses to hold his annual events at this special and iconic venue.

It is proposed that On Thursday, November 17th 200 to 300 guests and 15 hand picked Dj’s will attend the “All Vinyl DJ Showcase” that begins at 2pm and ends promptly at 7pm. The Showcase will display the skills and techniques of a Turntablist which include but are not limited to beat mixing/matching, scratching and beat juggling to manipulate sounds and create music. This event is not a competition but, a friendly gathering to see who has developed the fastest, most innovative/creative techniques while using upscale equipment.

Petar Cvetkovic aka Lomatic last had a release on Evasive as one third of Serbian DJ and production collective Dirty Cover. In the meantime, he has been busy in the studio producing remix and original projects for labels Wiggle, Audiometric, Acilectro Blue, Low Flow and Soul Industries, both as himself and also under his Lomatic moniker. Now Petar makes a welcome return to the Evasive with a first-rate comeback offering, a brand new solo project entitled The Centar EP.

The Centar EP features two new original tracks, the deeply textured and hypnotic Freedom Square, and the slightly tougher but no less mesmeric Green Wreath. Croatian based DJ and producer Pille, who co-owns digital label Acilectro and is one half of Pille & Lushi, takes time out from his schedule to give his own slant on Freedom Square. After massaging the groove a little and stripping back the textures, he still retains the harmonics of the original to give us a finger-clicking dancefloor shuffler. Fellow Serbian The Sleeper, whose debut release for Evasive Deep recently hit the digital shelves, does a very dandy job with his remix of Green Wreath. As with all of his productions, his version of this track is a warm and emotive creeper, perfect for the early hours.

For those not in the know, Focus Puller is the new alias for Mike Healey, and this metamorphosis signals a transition in his approach to producing and performing. Mike now prefers to concentrate on creating live sets of his new material, rather than the conventional conveyor belt procedure of completing a track and moving on to the next one. This new live material has then been arranged for release, and two tracks ‘Breathe Easy’ and ‘The Grinch’ have already been brought out on Roomba and Cubism respectively, winning support from people such as Funk D’void, Paul Woolford, Reset Robot and Nelski amongst many others. This then brings us to this release, featuring two mighty tracks which have been shaking the foundations of Evasive HQ.

Quirkily entitled Millipede and Flaccid Tabard, both tracks on this release bear all the hallmarks of Mr. Healey’s uniquely bold and twisted production style. Mercilessly heavyweight Tech grooves, bass-driven and laced with atmospheric pads, synths and vocal samples, both tunes have already been road tested as part of Mike’s live sets, receiving a rapturous applause on the dancefloor at Mike’s residency, the Cubism parties @Source Bar in Maidstone.
